I have lived a large part of my life in a world that doesn't have ready made solutions available 'off the shelf'. To a large degree this is still the case for many. It really depends on ones ability to figure out just how the bits go together, whether or not the end goal is achieved.
I have built everything I needed from scratch. Mostly because I couldn't or was unwilling to afford to buy the 'ready-made' product.
I still look for the best inexpensive solutions for what I wish to do.
